Embark on Take a Walk on the Wild Side- Reptiles and Amphibians!

Prepare to delve into the fascinating world of reptiles and amphibians alongside our expert educators amidst the stunning landscapes of Mill Mountain. Our journey begins at 6:00PM in front of the Discovery Center before we start our adventure with our native species of reptiles and amphibians and their important roles in shaping the environment.

Program Highlights:

  1. Native Reptiles and Amphibians Chat (30 mins): Kickstart the morning with an informative chat about the diverse array of native reptiles and amphibians found on Mill Mountain. Learn about their unique adaptations, behaviors, and the crucial roles they play in maintaining the ecosystem's balance.
  2. Morning Hike Exploration (45 mins - 1 hour): Embark on a scenic hike around Mill Mountain, guided by our experienced educators. As we traverse the lush trails, keep a keen eye out for sightings of reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitats. Our educators will pause the hike to provide intriguing insights into the species we encounter, including their habitats, diet, and conservation status.
  3. Animal Encounter at the Zoo (1 hour): Conclude our adventure with a visit to the zoo, where we'll explore the connections between reptiles, amphibians, and other animals. Our educators will highlight some of the zoo's residents that rely on reptiles and amphibians for various aspects of their lives, offering valuable insights into their relationships and the importance of biodiversity.

  • Location: Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden, Mill Mountain hiking trails, and Mill Mountain Zoo
  • Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours
  • Recommended Attire: Comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor exploration, sturdy walking shoes, and layers to accommodate changing temperatures.
  • Provided: Field guides, binoculars, and visibility sashes (all provided materials will need to be returned at the end of the program)
  • Note: Please bring a water bottle and sunscreen for sun protection during the hike, and be prepared for moderate physical activity. You are welcome to bring any field guides or binoculars of your own as well.
