Special Things to Do: Keeper Chats
The keepers love sharing information about their animals. Kids (of all ages) love watching them interact with their charges and learning more about the special relationships they share and how the animals are cared for. Plan to spend some time watching the animals during their feeding times.

Zoo Choo Train ride
Mill Mountain Zoo’s Zoo Choo is a miniature replica of the original Norfolk Executive train.
Train runs seven days a week (weather permitting).
Cost is $2 per person for two laps around the Zoo.
Special programs for school groups
Our Education Department has special programs available for groups ages 4 – college. We also offer special programs for scout groups, camp-outs and home-schools with designed programs to fit your needs. Can’t come to the Zoo? Let us bring some animals to you. Gifts and Snacks
Mill Mountain Zoo has a great gift shop offering a variety of children’s toys, t-shirts, hats, artwork and souvenirs for you or to give as a gift to someone special. All profits benefit the Zoo’s education and conservation efforts.
Star City Smoothies provides healthy refreshment options including their 100% fruit smoothies and healthy food and snacks. They are open whenever the zoo is open. Enjoy!
Tips for a Great Visit: The Rules of the Wild
Please help us keep our animals and guests safe by following our suggestions.
- Smoking is not permitted inside the Zoo.
- Straws are not allowed for the animals’ safety.
- The animals are on special diets; please do not feed them anything.
- Pets are not allowed inside the Zoo (service animal owners must check in with Zoo administration office.)
- Shirt and shoes are required at all times.
- Bicycles, skateboards, roller blades and rolling shoes are not allowed in the Zoo.
- We do not issue refunds or rain checks.
- Children must be supervised by parents at all times.
Near-by attractions – spend the day on the mountain!
Located directly at the entrance to the Zoo is the Roanoke City Parks and Recreation Discovery Center, a nature center. Enjoy a walk through the Hunting Hills Garden Club’s wildflower garden on way to Zoo. We are within walking distance to the Roanoke Star, a great place to view the city of Roanoke, take pictures and picnic.
