Training Seminar held at Mill Mountain Zoo - Wednesday, August 11, 2010As we have seen with disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, floods, tornadoes and other disaster, both natural and man-made, it is not just the people who are affected. Animals are often severely impacted by evacuations and other factors involved in these disasters. With many people keeping exotic animals in their homes emergency responders must be able to deal with large snakes and lizards as well as exotic birds and mammals. The Animal Control and Protection Unit of the Roanoke Police Department is sponsoring an Animal Disaster Training class at their academy. The class is part of a series of steps being taken to set up a local State Animal Response Team (SART). This training will be used to help rescue and reunite owners and their pets during any natural or man-made disasters that might affect the Southwest Virginia area. As a part of the training the group will be at the Mill Mountain Zoo on Wednesday, October 11 from 8:00 am until 11:30 am to get training on dealing with exotic animals. The training will be lead by experienced members of the Animal Care Department and Dave Orndorf, General Curator for Mill Mountain Zoo. They will be deomonstrating working with large pythons, iguanas, alligators, macaws, parrots, red-tailed hawks, great horned owl, sandhill cranes and other species of animals. |
