Dear Friends of Mill Mountain Zoo:

In 1952, a forward-thinking group of citizens and merchants gathered together to dedicate this treasured Zoo atop Mill Mountain. With the dawn of 2017, the Zoo will celebrate its 65th anniversary in the Roanoke Valley! We ask you to be part of this ongoing tradition. The Zoo is home to 175 animals; all of them need your support!

We celebrated lots of new developments in 2016. We welcomed two new red foxes, Mia and Eli, and another red wolf, Colt. We moved our Eurasian Lynx, Jayden, to a new exhibit. She now overlooks her carnivorous friends, the wolves. Eagle Scout troop 221 has built a new enclosure for our raptors. We successfully hosted a variety of programs and events at the Zoo, which included: Breakfast with the Animals, Night Howls, ZooBoo, and Zoo-Do. We also launched our first ever Brew at the Zoo – a successful evening of great bluegrass music, local beer, and the best sunset view in Roanoke.

In October, our board members met with the City Manager, and Roanoke County Administrator, regional government leaders, Virginia Tech administrators, and other key stakeholders to talk about the Zoo’s 180° redesign. The redesign was well-received and we look forward to implementing these changes which will include a more concentrated focus on a Blue Ridge Wildlife-focused collection. Finally, on December 3rd, we will host the inaugural Holiday Adventure Mart with Santa Claus, refreshments, and activities.

In 2017, we will continue working toward the 180° redesign and a Blue Ridge Wildlife-focused collection. As part of that process, we hope to welcome other native species in new exhibits.

How can you be a part of the Zoo’s mission? Did you know that it costs approximately $2,500 each day to run the Zoo? Your generous gifts provide food, shelter, enrichment toys, veterinary care, protection of endangered species, and educational opportunities for students.

Please support our Zoo with your generous tax-deductible gift of $50, $100, $250, $500 or other amount.

We look forward to continuing to serve as an educational resource in the community, a haven for endangered and native species of animals, and a respite at the gateway of the Blue Ridge. Thank you for your generous support!
