Mill Mountain Zoo is located on the top of Mill Mountain, overlooking the City of Roanoke and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Mill Mountain Zoo is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, whose mission is to promote an appreciation and understanding of wildlife and habitat preservation through the use of quality exhibits and educational programs and to work in cooperation with other animal conservation programs.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Mill Mountain Zoo is seeking a self-motivated, flexible, and responsible Maintenance Technician to join our Facilities Team. This full-time position consists of 40 hours per week and includes weekends, holidays, and occasional early and evening hours, as well as being on-call for emergencies. This position is responsible for maintaining the Zoo’s buildings, grounds, and systems to ensure compliance with Zoological Association of America (ZAA) accreditation standards and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements. This role supports facility and grounds improvements that advance the Zoo’s mission and ensure a safe, functional environment for animals, staff, and guests.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain Zoo buildings, grounds, and systems in compliance with ZAA and USDA standards
- Perform routine, preventive, and seasonal maintenance
- Assist with repairs and upgrades to animal exhibits and surrounding areas
- Maintain and inspect tools, equipment, and vehicles to ensure safe operation
- Respond to facility emergencies on an on-call basis
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations
- Attend staff meetings and perform other duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager and the Executive Director
- Represent the Zoo professionally through courteous and respectful interactions with staff and guests
- Perform other duties as needed for the role.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical trade training strongly preferred
- Minimum two years of hands-on experience in building, grounds, or facilities maintenance
- Hands-on experience in multiple trades, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, concrete, drywall, painting, landscaping, and basic vehicle or equipment maintenance
- Strong problem-solving skills, organization, initiative, and work ethic
- Ability to manage time, work independently, and collaborate effectively with staff
- Ability to manage changing priorities and work in varying weather conditions
- Ability to read technical manuals and use a computerized work order system
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
- Ability to follow policies, procedures, and safety regulations
- Prompt and reliable attendance
- Prioritizes safety and follows all workplace protocols and regulations
- Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Eligibility for employment in the United States and ability to meet pre-employment requirements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Be in good physical health.
- Ability to safely lift, move and pull up to 100 pounds
- Able to work outdoors year-round in all periods of inclement weather – extreme heat/cold, snow, ice, wind, hail, sleet, and rain.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and walk five miles or more per day
- Ability to walk up and down steep terrain, and on uneven terrain.
- Ability to hear, see in color, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, reach, twist, balance, push/pull, and climb stairs and ladders.
- Able to maintain a clean, professional appearance.
- Successful completion of a post-offer background check and drug screening.
