Northern Lynx

Lynx lynx lynx

Eats

Prey on deer species, but will rely on smaller species where ungulate (hooved) prey is not abundant.

Lives

They are in boreal forest (meaning mostly coniferous trees, such as pine and spruce) throughout much of it's range. But have also been found in thinly wooded areas, scrub woodland, and hills in desert regions.

Behavior

Lynx are typically crepuscular, active at dawn and dusk, or nocturnal. They will use dense thickets, trees, and rocky outcroppings to rest during the day. Lynx are solitary except for during the breeding season. During the breeding season lynx make a wide variety of vocalizations. Vocalizations include mews, yowls, hisses, and purrs.

Description

Eurasian Lynx are medium size cats that come in variety of colors and patterns. The three main coat patterns are mostly spotted, mostly striped, and unpatterned. Coat color can vary with the season and locality. They have long legs and large, snowshoe-like paws. Both their short tail and ear tufts are tipped with black fur. They are the largest of the four species of lynx species.

During the winter Northern Lynx's paws are covered with long, thick hair that helps their feet act like snowshoes.
