MILL MOUNTAIN ZOO WELCOMES 8 RED WOLVES

Mill Mountain Zoo is pleased to announce the arrival of the “Durham” pack, a family group of 8 red wolves. These wolves were transferred from the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC on January 13, 2020. The group includes: Moose and Cary, and their litter of pups Bronto, Rocket, Sprout, Lunar, Mist, and Carolina.  This transfer comes as a recommendation made during a July 2019 meeting of member institutions working with the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan.  This program works with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Recovery Program to ensure the sustainability of this critically endangered canid.  Native to the southeastern United States, the population total for wild and captive wolves is fewer than 300 animals.  Mill Mountain Zoo has worked cooperatively with this program since 1988 and in that time has cared for twenty-one Red wolves.
